Reflects a social relationship as well as personal friendship. In several instances Schuschnigg expresses appreciation for works of Werfel, including the posthumous novel Stern der Ungeborenen. Several items contain expressions of concern and empathy during the course of Manon Gropius's illness. 1 item mainly concerns the death of Schuschnigg's wife, in 1935. In the postwar correspondence Schuschnigg touches at one point on his experiences during the war. Condolence letters upon the deaths of Manon and of Werfel are included (the latter letter was forwarded by Roth). Also included is a printed copy of Schuschnigg's speech of 29. May 1935, Für Österreichs Freiheit und Recht.
